1. Introduction
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) are a legal contract between you (“you,” “your”) and Legesher Inc, a Delaware corporation (“Legesher,” “we,” “us,” “our”). They govern your use of www.legesher.io, our hosted services, any datasets or curriculum we license, and the Legesher brand. By using the website or any of the services covered by these Terms, you agree to be bound by them.
If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the website or the covered services.
Our Privacy Policy lives at www.legesher.io/privacy and is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
2. Who We Are
Legesher operates globally through two sibling entities:
- Legesher Inc — a Delaware C-Corporation, United States. This entity is the contracting party under these Terms and the entity against which claims arising from these Terms may be brought.
- Legesher Global Tech Limited — registered in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), United Arab Emirates. Assists with global operations; not the contracting party under these Terms.

3. Definitions
- “Website” means www.legesher.io and its subpages, excluding docs.legesher.io. The documentation site's content is part of the Open-Source Software release and is governed by the Apache 2.0 License; its data-handling is governed by a separate documentation privacy policy.
- “Open-Source Software” means the Legesher VS Code extension code, language pack code, core engine, and any other software we publish under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the “Apache 2.0 License”). The Apache 2.0 License governs the Open-Source Software; these Terms do not restrict or replace the Apache 2.0 License.
- “Hosted Services” means any online service we operate, including (when launched) the Legesher Translation API and any hosted SaaS offerings. Hosted Services are governed by these Terms plus any service-specific agreement presented to you at sign-up.
- “Curated Datasets” means datasets we compile, package, and license separately from the Open-Source Software. Examples include translation corpora sold for ML training and research datasets offered under a commercial data license.
- “Curriculum” means educational materials, lessons, and courses that we license separately from the Open-Source Software, including for educational institutions.
- “Legesher Brand” means the “Legesher” name, logo, trademarks, and trade dress.
- “Commercial License” means a paid license agreement with Legesher Inc granting rights to use Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum beyond what these Terms allow without payment.
4. Scope of These Terms
These Terms govern:
- Your use of the Website
- Your use of Hosted Services (when launched)
- Your use of Curated Datasets and Curriculum
- Your use of the Legesher Brand
These Terms do NOT govern:
- The Open-Source Software. Our VS Code extension code, language pack code, and core engine are published under the Apache License 2.0. You may use, modify, distribute, and build commercial products from that code under the terms of the Apache 2.0 License, subject only to that license's requirements. Nothing in these Terms restricts or adds to the Apache 2.0 License.
- Third-party services we link to. GitHub, Buttondown, Google Forms, Slack, LinkedIn, Instagram, and any other third parties have their own terms.
- The documentation site (docs.legesher.io). Its content is part of the Apache 2.0 release; its data-handling is governed by the documentation privacy policy.
If there is a conflict between these Terms and a service-specific agreement you have signed with Legesher Inc (for example, a Commercial License), the service-specific agreement controls.
5. Our Licensing Model
Legesher is an open-core project. The code is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 License. Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, and Curriculum are licensed commercially to fund the ongoing development and community support of the open-source core.
5.1 What requires no license (free for all uses)
| Asset | License | Your rights |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code extension code | Apache 2.0 | Use, modify, distribute, include in commercial products — subject only to Apache 2.0 terms |
| Language pack code | Apache 2.0 | Same |
| Core engine and CLI | Apache 2.0 | Same |
| Browsing the Website | These Terms | Read content, subscribe to newsletter, fill surveys, contact us |
5.2 What requires a Commercial License
Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, and Curriculum described below are forward-looking offerings. At the time of this policy's last update, none have launched publicly. The rows below describe the licensing model that will apply when each becomes available; you will be presented with a service-specific agreement at sign-up.
| Activity | Tier | How to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Personal use of Hosted Services (when launched) | Personal — free | Sign up via the Website; no payment required |
| Educational institution use of Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum | Education — discounted paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Non-profit use of Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum | Non-profit — discounted paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Commercial / for-profit use of Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum | Commercial — full paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Training or fine-tuning AI/ML models using Curated Datasets or Hosted Service outputs | Commercial — paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Systematically harvesting Hosted Service outputs to build a derivative dataset, training corpus, or competing product | Commercial — paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Redistributing Curated Datasets (in whole or substantial part) to third parties | Commercial — paid license | sales@legesher.com |
| Using the Legesher Brand (name, logo) beyond fair reference | Trademark permission | sales@legesher.com |
5.3 Apache 2.0 specifically allows AI training on the Open-Source Software
We want to be explicit: because the Open-Source Software is released under the Apache 2.0 License, you may use it to train, fine-tune, or evaluate AI/ML models, and you may build commercial products from it, without paying us or asking permission. The restriction in Section 5.2 on AI training applies to Curated Datasets we license separately and the outputs of Hosted Services, not to the publicly released Open-Source code.
6. Acceptable Use of the Website
When using the Website, you agree not to:
- Violate any applicable law, regulation, or third-party right
- Scrape, harvest, or systematically extract content from the Website for commercial redistribution without a Commercial License (normal browsing, indexing by search engines, and personal note-taking are fine)
- Submit false, misleading, or harmful content via forms or surveys
- Attempt to probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Website or circumvent any security feature
- Interfere with or disrupt the Website, servers, or networks connected to the Website
- Use the Website to distribute malware, spam, phishing attempts, or other harmful content
- Impersonate any person or entity, or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity
- Use the Website in any way that suggests official endorsement, partnership, or employment by Legesher when none exists
If you believe you've discovered a security vulnerability, please report it to security@legesher.com instead of publicly disclosing it.
7. Commercial Licensing
Use of Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum beyond the Personal tier requires a written Commercial License issued by Legesher Inc.
7.1 How to obtain a Commercial License
- Email sales@legesher.com with:
- Your name and the name of your organization
- Your organization type (educational institution, non-profit, or commercial / for-profit)
- A short description of the intended use
- Expected scale (number of users, requests, dataset size, etc.)
- We will respond with pricing and a license agreement tailored to your tier.
- On signing and payment, your license becomes effective. Licenses are typically annual and auto-renewing unless otherwise agreed.
7.2 Education and non-profit discounts
Accredited educational institutions and registered non-profits receive a discounted rate on the Commercial License price. A valid license is still required; the discount does not waive the licensing requirement. Proof of accreditation or non-profit status may be requested.
7.3 What a Commercial License covers
Each Commercial License specifies the licensed activity (e.g., “educational use of the Legesher Translation API for up to 10,000 students” or “commercial access to the Python translation dataset for ML training”). Activities outside the scope of your license require a separate agreement.
Nothing in a Commercial License changes your rights to the Open-Source Software under the Apache 2.0 License.
8. Disclaimers
8.1 Not Legal, Educational, or Professional Advice
Legesher is a technology provider, not an educational institution, law firm, translation service, or accreditation body. Content on the Website, in Curriculum, or produced by Hosted Services is for informational and developer purposes only and does not constitute legal, educational, accreditation, financial, medical, or professional advice.
If you need such advice, consult a qualified professional. Legesher accepts no responsibility for decisions made in reliance on its content, translations, or outputs.
8.2 Translation Accuracy
Legesher's translations are community-validated and continuously improving, generated from a combination of community contributions, machine translation models, and curation. While we aim for high quality, translations are best-effort and may contain errors, ambiguities, cultural mismatches, or context-dependent inaccuracies.
We strongly recommend human review of all translations for mission-critical applications — including but not limited to safety-critical systems, regulated industries (medical, legal, financial), accessibility tooling, and any context where translation errors could cause real-world harm.
Legesher makes no warranty that any translation is accurate, complete, fit for a particular purpose, or free from cultural bias.
8.3 Open Source vs. Commercial Services
Legesher's Open-Source Software (VS Code extension, language pack code, core engine) is available under the Apache 2.0 License and may be used freely for any purpose, including commercial use, derivative works, and AI training, subject to the Apache 2.0 License terms. Please read the LICENSE file in the Legesher repository for the full text.
Our Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, and Curriculum are separate offerings that are not part of the Apache 2.0 release. They are licensed commercially. Please do not assume that a right granted by Apache 2.0 over the Open-Source code extends to the Hosted Services, Datasets, or Curriculum — it does not.
Use of the Legesher brand, logo, or trademarks is governed by trademark law and is not granted by the Apache 2.0 License. Fair reference (describing the project, linking to us) is welcome; implying endorsement, partnership, or ownership is not.
8.4 Student Data (Hosted API — forward-looking)
When Legesher's Hosted Translation API launches, it is designed to process translation requests statelessly: the API receives a code snippet, returns a translation, and does not store student code, source files, or request payloads beyond the transient processing window needed to serve the response.
Educational institutions licensing the Hosted API for student use can therefore direct students to use it without Legesher retaining student work product. Aggregated, non-identifying usage metrics (request counts, language pair popularity, latency) may be retained for service improvement; no student code, variable names, literal values, or personal identifiers are retained.
This section describes our design intent for the upcoming Hosted API. The exact data-handling commitments for the Hosted API will be formalized in the API Service Agreement presented at sign-up. Until the Hosted API launches, this disclaimer describes our forward-looking posture rather than a currently live service.
9. Intellectual Property
9.1 Legesher's rights
The Website content, the Legesher Brand, Curated Datasets, and Curriculum are the exclusive intellectual property of Legesher Inc, protected by copyright, trademark, and other applicable laws. These Terms grant you no rights to any of those assets except the limited rights described above.
The Open-Source Software is governed by the Apache 2.0 License, not by this section. Your rights to the Open-Source Software are those granted by the Apache 2.0 License, including the right to modify, distribute, and use the code commercially.
9.2 Your content
Content you submit to the Website (for example, survey responses, newsletter feedback, contact-form messages) remains yours. By submitting it, you grant Legesher a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use it to operate and improve the Website and our services, to respond to you, and to publish aggregated or anonymized insights derived from it.
Do not submit content that infringes any third-party right or violates any applicable law.
9.3 Feedback
If you send us feedback, suggestions, bug reports, or feature requests, you grant Legesher a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, implement, and publish that feedback without any obligation to compensate or credit you. You are never required to submit feedback, and you can email privacy@legesher.com to opt out of any optional acknowledgment.
9.4 Use of the Legesher Brand
You may refer to “Legesher” by name in neutral, factual contexts (for example, writing “I use Legesher to code in Spanish” or linking to our site). You may not use the Legesher name or logo in any way that implies endorsement, sponsorship, or partnership without written permission from Legesher Inc. Requests go to sales@legesher.com.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE WEBSITE, HOSTED SERVICES, CURATED DATASETS, AND CURRICULUM ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. The Open-Source Software carries its own warranty disclaimer under the Apache 2.0 License; nothing in this Section changes that.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Legesher disclaims all warranties, whether express, implied, statutory, or otherwise, including without limitation:
- Merchantability — no guarantee the services are fit for sale or use
- Fitness for a particular purpose — no guarantee the services meet your needs
- Non-infringement — no guarantee the services do not violate third-party rights
- Accuracy or reliability — no guarantee of correct, complete, or reliable operation (see also Section 8.2 on translation accuracy)
- Security — no guarantee against vulnerabilities, breaches, or data loss
- Availability — no guarantee of uptime or continuous availability
- Compatibility — no guarantee of compatibility with all systems or configurations
You use the Website, Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, and Curriculum entirely at your own risk. We strongly recommend maintaining backups of all important code and data and reviewing translations before relying on them for critical applications.
11. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL LEGESHER INC, ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY:
- Indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
- Loss of profits, revenue, business, or anticipated savings
- Loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses
- Business interruption or system failure
- Cost of substitute software, services, or technology
- Any other damages arising out of or related to these Terms or your use of the Website, Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum (the Open-Source Software carries its own liability disclaimer under the Apache 2.0 License)
EVEN IF LEGESHER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
LEGESHER'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID LEGESHER UNDER A COMMERCIAL LICENSE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (USD $100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In such jurisdictions, Legesher's liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Legesher Inc, its affiliates, and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and licensors from and against any and all claims, demands, actions, losses, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to:
- Your use or misuse of the Website, Hosted Services, Curated Datasets, or Curriculum
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your violation of any applicable law or regulation
- Your violation of any third-party right, including intellectual property rights
- Any content you submit to or through the Website
You agree to cooperate fully with Legesher in the defense of any claim subject to indemnification.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make changes:
- We will update the “Last updated” date at the top
- For material changes, we may notify you via email (if you are subscribed to our newsletter or have otherwise provided us with an email address) or through a prominent notice on the Website
Your continued use of the Website or covered services after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree, stop using the Website and covered services.
14. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution
14.1 Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.
14.2 Informal resolution first
Before filing any legal action, please contact legal@legesher.com (or sales@legesher.com for licensing disputes) to attempt informal resolution. Many issues can be resolved quickly without formal proceedings.
14.3 Arbitration for U.S. users
If informal resolution fails and you are located in the United States, any dispute shall be resolved by binding arbitration under the Consumer Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA). You agree to arbitrate disputes individually, not as part of any class action. Arbitration takes place in Delaware unless both parties agree to another location or to resolve the dispute remotely.
14.4 Courts for non-U.S. users
If you are located outside the United States, disputes may be resolved in courts of competent jurisdiction. You and Legesher agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Delaware for any disputes that cannot be resolved informally.
14.5 Injunctive relief
Notwithstanding the above, either party may seek injunctive or other equitable relief in any court of competent jurisdiction to protect its intellectual property rights, trademarks, or confidential information.
15. General Provisions
15.1 Entire agreement
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any Commercial License or service-specific agreement you enter into with Legesher Inc, constitute the entire agreement between you and Legesher regarding the Website and the covered services.
15.2 Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.
15.3 No waiver
Failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not waive that provision or any other.
15.4 Assignment
You may not assign or transfer these Terms without Legesher Inc's prior written consent. Legesher Inc may assign these Terms freely, including in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
15.5 Export compliance
You agree to comply with all applicable export control laws and regulations when using the Website or any covered service.
